In the midst of the 10th century, a wealthy and influential Muslim diplomat named Ahmad ibn Fadlan is exiled from his homeland to the land of the Northmen. Initially, he finds himself in the company of a group of rough-around-the-edges Viking warriors, who are more accustomed to pillaging and plundering than engaging in diplomatic niceties. Ibn Fadlan's initial encounters with the Vikings leave him shocked and appalled by their primitive ways and brutal customs. However, as he spends more time among them, he begins to develop a begrudging respect for their strength, bravery, and unwavering loyalty to one another.
